On the 18th and 19th of July we were very lucky to attend the 23rd edition of the International Biennial of Graphic Design from Brno. This Biennial is the oldest from all the similar events hosted in Europe, being well appreciated for the approached subjects, with a strong emphasis on typography, the foundation of graphic design. The special guests of this edition were Andrew Altmann (UK), Otakar Karlas (CZ), Zuzana Lednická (CZ), Daniel Van Der Velden (NL), Jonathan Barnbrook (UK) and Fumio Tachibana (JP). The book design gallery showcased extensive and innovative examples of printing techniques, type and paper (or other printing support), binding, which will most certainly open new communication channels in book design.
On one hand we were very impressed by how seriously design quality is treated in Europe, but on the other hand we were disappointed because we can’t attend such conferences and galleries in Romania. We can only hope that in the nearest future we, as a nation and industry, will also be able to appreciate and host similar events.
